A rapidly growing fintech company providing government API access to enterprises was drowning in infrastructure maintenance, with their team spending more time on emergency fixes and manual deployments than strategic development. Operating in a heavily regulated environment requiring on-premise systems, the infrastructure team had adopted a "pets not cattle" mentality that created operational bottlenecks as they scaled from 15 to 35 engineering team members. Customer support escalations required database queries that only infrastructure staff could perform, deployments happened manually, and critical systems lacked proper redundancy, creating business risks that grew more dangerous with each passing month.
522 Software's approach focused on systematically recovering team time to enable strategic improvements. We first implemented self-service systems for the most frequent customer support issues, maintaining service levels while freeing infrastructure capacity for higher-impact work. Next, we established automation priorities and guided hiring decisions toward automation expertise, incrementally automating manual processes like SSL renewal and deployment workflows. Through kubernetes-based self-service deployments and comprehensive training, the engineering team became self-sufficient, eventually preferring self-service over manual processes due to faster feedback cycles. As infrastructure time freed up, we implemented proper monitoring, automated on-call processes, and conducted risk analysis that identified three critical business threats.
The transformation extended beyond operational efficiency to strategic risk mitigation. Working groups addressed PKI compliance issues that risked certification loss, implemented redundant storage systems to prevent potential outages, and modernized legacy services to reduce maintenance burden while improving reliability. The PKI remediation alone required coordinating with product teams to re-issue thousands of end-user certificates while ensuring audit compliance. The storage analysis resulted in an executive report that connected infrastructure needs to strategic initiatives, securing proper investment in systems that will support four years of projected growth. This comprehensive approach demonstrated how infrastructure modernization, when properly executed, transforms operational overhead into competitive advantage while building foundations for sustainable scale.
